Rock Wrasse - Halichoeres semicinctus

rock wrasse The Rock Wrasse (Halichoeres semicinctus) is quite an unusual fish. The reach lenghts of up to 15 inches and can live up to 14 years.

The Rock Wrasse range from the Gulf of California in the south to as far north as Northern California. Rock Wrasse prefer shallow waters with sand bottom.

Rock Wrasse are omnivours who's diet consist of snails, crabs, algae, and bryozoans.

The unusual thing about this fish is that they are born female and become male later in life. Usually when they reach 12 inches.

Pictured in the photo to the right is a male Rock Wrasse. The female Rock Wrasse (pictured below) have golden-colored, cigar-shaped bodies with black spots.
