yes there are black panthers in washington county alabama. i had one walk rite up on me one night in st,stephens.i had spent a month in a home made tent on some land we have way back in the woods. i had been feedind small bobcats and was not worried to much about them. but yhe night the BIG black panther eased up on me I thought that was the way i would die.I yelled and waved me arms in the air , it just looked at me. I thank God it turned around and walked back into the night. It was most beautful animal I have ever seen- Sunday, November 01, 2009 at 15:39:06 (EST)

The fact that their are black panthers in Alabama does not suprise me. I have found tracks and game managements officials have came and plastered the tracks. However they still do not think that they are actually panthers, i have gotten several pictures on my game cam not of deer or raccoons but of a black panther and even one with a cougar eating a deer. i have even seen one on my hunts- Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 09:17:17 (EDT)

Yes, I am not suprised I am waiting any moment now for a cougar to be confirmend in KENTUCKY. In my opinion KENTUCKY has a lot of cougar habitat and it is close to the appalacian mountain chain which has millions of acres of forest. A remenant population of cougar could have easily survived in east KENTUCKY.- Friday, October 23, 2009 at 17:36:31 (EDT)

On Sept 22, 09 I posted on this site reference that I had personally spoken to around 6 people that have seen cougar in the Red River Gorge area in Kentucky. This past weekend 2 hikers in the Gorge area encountered a mountain lion / cougar that leaped down off of a cliff some 40 feet above them onto the trail that they were hiking on and landed 30 feet in front of them on their trail. This was reported to the Eastern Puma Research Network.www.ohiomountainlionwatch.wetpaint.com- Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 11:36:45 (EDT)

YES a MOUNTAIN LION WAS CONFIRMED near SALT FORK STATE PARK IN OHIO. Of course the dnr said it was a pet,but it was possibly a wild mountain lion. This is not a surprise to me Ohio has about 8 MILLION ACRES OF FOREST, lots of deer, and it is close to truly wild states like kentucky, west Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The Ohio dnr used to say bear were gone from the state many decades ago but people reported seeing them anyway. So bear never left Ohio, even though the dnr said they did, well I bet cougar never left rural Ohio either.- Sunday, October 18, 2009 at 17:00:10 (EDT)

What you are seeing in ALAMAMA could be FLORIDA PANTHER, I know that last year a wild FLORIDA PANTHER was shot near the ALABAMA/ GEORGIA BORDER I think it was near the Chatohoochie River near Columbus Georgia. It is possible cougar could still be in parts of ALABAMA the state has around 22 million acres of forest. I know for a fact that their are mountain lion in the south in states like NORTH CAROLINA, TENNESSEE, AND KENTUCKY. Try to set out some trail cameras and get some pictures.- Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 18:36:33 (EDT)

People can say there are no panthers or cougars in alabama, but i beg to differ. On several occasions both my dad and myself have come within 30 feet of them while hunting! people always say its just a coyote or bobcat, but what we saw was not a bobcat or coyote! this cat weighed around 80 pounds and had a long tail. Early one morning I had an up close experience with a panther. He came within 30 feet of me and stopped. It was not a bobcat or coyote. If there are no panthers or cougars in Alabama, then why are there laws protecting against killing these animals. There are several occasions where I could have easily killed these animals, but I really don't want to go to jail!! It is time to give up and admit that these cats roam alabama. I have seen them and I am not lying!- Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 00:45:42 (EDT)

Kentucky does have cougar I agree, I have seen one last year in the Land Between the Lakes recreation area. I was in hunting area 8 near Barkely Lake. I am poitive it was a cougar I have hunted here for 35 years and this is the first cougar I have seen, I told LBL staff about the cougar they said they have gotten other sightings recently. I have heard about cougar sightings in LBL before, in fact last month I was talking to a guy about hunting when he said him and his wife saw a cougar while fishing last may on kentucky lake, they said the cougar was on the east shore in LBL. They seemed credible to me , the man had hunted here his whole life and he grew up on a farm in calloway county. The truth is a few cougar are still raoming western kentucky. I have also seen a Black Bear here in western Kentucky over in Butler County, I guess Black bear are moving west into this part of kentucky.I also would not be suprised if a few remenant wolves were not still in part of tennessee and kentucky. But as far as cougar are concerned they are here I promise I have seen one, And I think they have always been here. My father grew up in southeast Kentucky in Harlan County, he says that stories of Couar were common in that area, and he says he saw a cougar behind his house, I fully believe him the area where he grew up is very remote you can walk 7 miles behind his old house before you come to a road, he also said black bear lived around southeast kentucky, even though the dnr said they did not. So I believe cougar have always lived in KENTUCKY.- Wednesday, October 07, 2009 at 13:30:27 (EDT)

I used to work for Peabody Coal Comapany from the early 1970s untill the mid 1990s. I happen to see a WILD COUGAR while working. I saw it walking across a feild one evening when I was leaving my job. The cougar would have been in the area now known as Peabody wildlife management area. I saw it back in the late 1980s. I am sure it was a cougar it was about as big as a yearling deer, and had a tail about 2 or 3 feet long. I hunt and fish in this area alot and have recently heard of many cougar sighings down near butler county kentucky.- Wednesday, October 07, 2009 at 12:24:47 (EDT)

The DNR needs to be more open minded when it comes to cougar sightings. They always deny them, but the so called experts are ALWAYS WRONG! For years the DNR denied cougar in states in the east now almost all of those states have had cougar confirmation, you would think the so called experts would learn their lesson. Usually when a species is labled extinct then it will end up being REDICOVERED in a few years. The bottom line is there are not that been people who work for the Dnr so, they cant know every animal that is out there. MOUNTAIN LION COULD EASILY SURVIVE IN KENTUCKY, THERE IS 12 MILLION ACRES OF FOREST WILD ELK, AND DEER, AND OVER 90 PERCENT OF THE STATE IS UNDEVEPED. if mt lion can survive out in southern california with 57 million people, and over 200 people per square mile THEN MT LION CAN SURVIVE IN KENTUCKY, THEY DONT NEED BIG MASSIVE MOUNTAINS TO LIVE IN THEY CAN ADAPT ANYWHER IN FARMLAND AREAS OR IN A MIX OF FARM AND FOREST AREAS, out west where my relatives live in wyoming MT LIONS come in peoples backyards near towns. They dont need to be a hundred miles from town, they can live in your backyard and you may not know it. THE BOTTOM LINE IS COUGAR ARE HERE, THEY ARE A REMINANT POPULATION probably 95 percent of cougar were wiped out of the east and south in the early 1900s but some survived AND OVER TIME THEY HAVE REPRODUCED AND THAT IS WHY THERE ARE SO MANY RECENT SIGHTINGS, COUGAR HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AROUND. THERE MAY ONLY BE A COUPLE DOZEN IN KENTUCKY,THAT IS WHY THERE ARE NO ROAD KILLED COUGARS, WHAT IF THERE WERE ONLY A FEW DOZEN DEER, THEN PEOPLE WOULD NOT HIT ANY DEER, OR SEE ANY DEER EITHER, THEN PEOPLE WOULD THINK THEIR WERE NO DEER, BUT THERE WOULD BE, WELL THATS THE STORY WITH THE MT LIONS, THERE ARE ONLY A FEW DOZEN AROUND. BUT WILD MT LIONS ARE IN KENTUCKY!- Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 17:37:36 (EDT)

I am glad you all are reporting KY cougar sightings. I have lived in west KY for 21 years now. I hunt and fish regually. I also have trapped my entire life. I myself have a 1,100 acre property that I hunt located in Butler County Kentucky, near the green river not to far from the West KY Parkway. I have seen dozens of bobcats in my life. But I have also seen a MOUNTAIN LION. I saw it back in 2007 while deer hunting. I am 100% positive it was a MOUNTAIN LION. I saw it coming up a creek bottom about 100 yards away. I watched it for about 30 seconds then it went out of sight. And last week I found tracks that are without a doubt COUGAR TRACKS. I found them on my property while I was hanging my deer stands. I have hunting the last couple days but have yet to see the cougar that left the tracks. But YES, MOUNTAIN LION do live in KENTUCKY!- Monday, September 21, 2009 at 16:58:21 (EDT)

I also have been fortunate enough to see a COUGAR in KY. I say a wild cougar while driving down the Western Kentucky Parkway last month, which was AUGUST of 2009. It was about 2 AM.I was near the Green RIVER around Peabody wildlife management area. This is no suprise to me, the area is very rural and has thousands of deer and wild turkey for cougar to eat. I have grown up here, and I have heard about Cougar sightings for years, this is really nothing new to me. But I also am not suprised at the sightings of cougar in Land between the lakes recreation area (LBL). LBL is huge its over 170,000 acres and has been preserved since the early 1940s. And their is over 500,000 acres of preserved land in WESTERN KY. Not to mention the fact that Kentucky has over 1.7 Million acres preserved, and nearly 12 million acres of forested land.- Monday, September 21, 2009 at 16:49:41 (EDT)

Hi! Wanted to let ya'll know that WE TOO up in North Alabama have seen panthers. The wildlife services all laugh because one hasn't been hit and reported. It only missed my tires by 30 feet - was LARGE - about 4 1/2 feet long and as black as midnight w/o the moon. It still visits my property and my parents' property regularly and has at least one cub. Sounds awful! Makes ALL HAIRS stand up! I spoke with with 2 older persons that lived in my area in the 70's and they said they released a couple to get rid of certain deer overpopulations. real smart, huh? Real people hunters would have been glad to oblige, I think. It kept us from having a funn summer outside with our kids: growled at my husband when he walked by some brush and did not see, was apparently too close to a cub. Thanks for the site.- Monday, August 31, 2009 at 19:36:10 (EDT)

Yes and it was wild and was the Florida subspecies as well I think. The hunter has not been charged yet at least. Most of the pro cougar organizations are not calling for the hunters head much to my surprise since the Florida Panther is Federally protected. Still waiting to see if the Feds press charges. The law in Georgia does not protect western cougars. It is impossible to tell from sight so after this incident the laws are being looked into to put in changes to protect all panthers so this delima doesn't happen again.- Sunday, August 30, 2009 at 00:24:33 (EDT)

Cougars NEVER left this part of the country-East of the Mississippi. They've been seen by natives in my area through out the history of settlement in our region. Although it is not documented by many photos it is documented in plenty of writings throughout the last two hundred years. Just because no DNR officials seem to be able to spot them while they're driving around in their trucks doesn't mean a lick. We've always had the habitat here in the midwest (yes even EAST of the Mississippi) so why would they ever leave? I live in a very isolated area where we hear them regularly and see them at least 2-5 times a year. My girls thought they were being chased by one last week while riding their bicycles...I'm not sure if it was chasing them or they were chasing the cat (wink), but they got a good look at it AND were pretty shook up as you can imagine. We have bob cats in the area as well. We all know the difference so don't go there. You cannot possibly compare a bobcat to a mountain lion visually... You may not find many scholars in our region or scientists, but the people who live here know the land and what is on it. The work it and hunt it everyday. I think some credit needs to be given to the true wildlife experts who gain their knowledge by experience-- not by book learning in some classroom in the city. Just a sidenote...We also have BLACK cats here in this region of Illinois. I've done the research and understand that black mountain lions are not documented...and yet people are continuously seeing SOMETHING. Whether they are cougars or melanistic jaguars remains to be seen, but they ARE here. My husband has seen one twice within a mile of our home...my daughter saw it cross through a fence and noted the LONG, THICK tail that seemed to go on forever. Two of our neighbors have also seen a black one at different times...it was within ten feet of them as a matter of fact. They were sitting in tree stands during deer season and the animal walked right underneath them. We WILL get a picture of a black, one of these days and I can't wait to say "I told you so" to all of the nay sayers!- Saturday, August 08, 2009 at 13:56:35 (EDT)

Acording to the Dyersburg Tennessee gazette john vinroot did his own study and confirmed a wild mt lion in Land Between the lakes national recreation area in southwest Kentucky. There is a lot of misconceptions playing out across the USA as to cougars/mountain lions in the east. As far is known, NO evidence exists of big cats in Land Between the Lakes, although 100s of sightings have been reported. CONFIRMED proof in way of pictures does exist of a cougar cub being killed by a car on Hippo Hill in Floyd Co, KY in 1997. Evidence CONFIRMED evidence of WILD, NATIVE cougars/pumas do exist in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota. The primary reason most evidence has not been placed on the internet is do to irresponsible individuals or what I call hackers who reload evidence, then redistribute pictures of (evidence) as occurring in states where the incident did NOT occur. This hacking of such evidence is confusing the issues & evidence confirmations. Such events help the cause of policy-making state wildlife officials. There is a huge assortment of proper evidence, some from retired wildlife personnel which should convince people, of current cougar populations in at least 15 of the 26 eastern states.- Monday, August 03, 2009 at 10:23:07 (EDT)

If there are no mountain lions or panthers etc. in all these states why are they protected species in the hunting regulations? Why do the "experts" so vehemently denie the reports and why do people report sightings now when they just lived with the cats around before? The facts are these big cats, black or not, are in all the lower 48 but the governments denie it so as to protect them from those horrible hunters. Just in case some one is a smart aleck and kills one to prove the government is wrong they make killing them illegal. For years farmers have killed them and wolves in the south and buried them, mum is the word, when these predators have become a problem. Now common folk that hunt or hike or just enjoy outdoors and not farm see these predators and they get offended by "experts" on tv and start reporting when ever they see them which causes "experts" to denie existence even more. In the swamps of south alabama in the 1980's lived large black cats, I won't tell where because if they are still there I don't want any one hunting them. But if the "experts" will contact me I will gladly tie them to a tree in those swamps and video them peeing all over themselves when a big black cat screams in the night like a woman being murdered. They will pee!- Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at 22:49:34 (EDT)

Around 2006 in rural part of bedford co. a large cat crossed the road in front of my truck, leaped a fence and stood as if to pose . this was indeed a cougar, I know my animals. he was tan with a white belly and black around his whiskers, length about 5ft, weight average was 100-120lbs my daugther had one crouch down by the road the morning of june 16 and then it leaped out 4ft from her car cleared the whole road and this cat was tan as well. I questioned her thinking she had seen a bobcat . she described this animal and called off all the species of big cats, and told me she know this cat was a cougar.- Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at 00:05:58 (EDT)

Wow, I too am honored to have someone of your stature post on my humble website. There may be some truth to cougars in the east are not immigrants from the Midwest, but there ample evidence that the cougars showing up in the south, and Midwest all up the central Mississippi valley are indeed immigrating in from other populations and not resident populations. Most corpse are of dispersing males, and some have even been cougars known from other populations such as South Dakato are from further west.- Monday, June 22, 2009 at 17:30:06 (EDT)

Cougars are NOT moving east from the midwest. Ancestors of the cougars seen in the east today, were the cougars Bruce S. Wright, Prof. Harold Hitchcock & Frank Weed identified thru track evidence in eastern Canada, New England & the Southeast States in the mid-1900s. Additional evidence the cougar's presence was provided by field studies of this writer in the Mid-Atlantic States in mid 1960s. More recently, videos & tracks confirmed as cougar have been found by field researchers & ID by professional animal trackers in Maine, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Va, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota. For more data & evidence on current presence of cougars/mountain lions in eastern North America, contact us at epuma@hardynet.com- Sunday, June 21, 2009 at 04:56:53 (EDT)

During the summer of 2008, there was also a tan colored big cat, about 120 lbs... cougar I suppose....that had been hit and killed on the west bound side of I-40 between Jackson and Memphis. We passed it, turned around at the next exit and went back again. We slowed down to get a good look at it and it was indeed a huge tan cougar-type cat.- Friday, June 19, 2009 at 18:43:54 (EDT)

I just moved here from northwest Tennessee, lived there about 5 years in a small town between Camden and Paris. I lived in the country and HEARD THE SCREAMS of the big cats and also SAW A VERY LARGE BLACK CAT! I don't know if it was a cougar, panther, or what kind but it was a HUGE black cat about 100 ft from the road. The field was full of tall wheat so there was no mistake that it was black...and if it was a house cat, then he had the longest legs in the history of house cats because it's body was plainly seen over the top of the wheat! Both my grandson and I saw it, I turned the car around and went back and it was still walking slowly across the field. I turned around again and this time he was walking back a fence line toward the woods. THREE times we saw this black cat and at just 100 ft there was also no mistake that it was NOT a house cat as we plainly could see the huge-ness of it's sleek muscular body. Also numerous times during the night we have heard the screams of big cats in the woods behind our house. A friend of my son's spent the night once and during the night heard one scream. They went out on the porch and started screaming back....and this cat came right down to the back corner of the house (after the boys came in of course!) The dogs were going wild but being little inside dogs we didn't let them out. When we first moved there, I had no idea there were big cats in Tennessee until I started hearing strange screams, so I looked it up online....and found the website about cougar sightings in West Tennessee....blew my mind!!! So I don't care WHAT the "experts" say.....they are HERE and they ate HUGE and they ARE BLACK!!!!!!!- Friday, June 19, 2009 at 18:34:55 (EDT)

Some of you crack me up. When the cougar population is increased and you start to lose your pet dog and or cats. When you go out for a walk and carry a stick while walking your dog, and a big kitty cat comes over and could care less about you stick, it just wants to kill and eat your dog. I am a hunter and could show you picas of these cats but I won't cause if they see me and stalk me then it is my turn to stalk them. I do not poach but I will not tolerate my farm animals being killed cause the state says there is no big wild cats in our area. Bull.- Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 19:05:57 (EDT)

I hope someone could give me some helpful feed back. In the spring of March/ April 2008 I had 2 horses due to foal. As a crow flies I live approx. 2 miles from the Pearl River, which is normally rising from the northern snow melt. During this time I had a pony of mine get brutally attacked by what the Veternarian claimed to be a very large cat. He said the bite marks were two large to be a bobcat, coyote, dog or anything other than a large cat. There were very large sets of claw marks covering the entire backside of this pony. The ponies neck was also covered with claw marks, more like 1/8" to 1/4" in depth. when all was said in done I could put my hand in one side of her mane and out the other. It was a good 6 months of extensive therapy to fully recover from her wounds. Meanwhile my 2 mares had foaled with no foals to be found! The Vet came out and examined the mares and said they had foaled, but could not explain the disappearance of the foals. So I bred the mares again last June, which would make them foal May, early June at latest. Well the first mare was full term and delivered once again, but no foal was to be found. Now my other mare which carries later has foaled and once again has delivered, according to the Vet, but there is no foal to be found. This is extremely disappointing 2 years in a row for this to have happened. Another thing to note is that both mares were locked in stalls at night and turned out only for the day under suppervision in a 3 acre field. My neighbor about 3 years ago was mowing his yard and came within 35 yards from what he describes as a very large chocolate colored cat, weighing about 50 to 70 lbs., with a very long tail curling at the end. If you speek to the old timers in the area they will all tell me tales of there being cats around the area. I have exhausted so much effort, but getting no where. The MSDWFP told me to shoot it. Are there ways to bait such an animal? I am desperate to do something, I have small children and if there are such cats in the area, I feel something should be done. After doing some research in Spring of 2008 there were 5 other case of ponies within a 30 mile area that had also been attacked by something very large. If there is any feedback you could give it would be appreciated. thank for listing, Lynda Kauzlarich- Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at 23:54:14 (EDT)

This is the time of year when the cougar offspring leave their mothers to venture off into the real world by themselves. They have been taught by their mother how to effectively attack prey, deer, rabbits etc.Sub adult or rabid cats are usually the ones that are being seen by exposing themselves out from the cover of the woods or forest. Locally, here in Hamilton County, Ohio we have had a rash of sightings. A local Sheriff Deputy and his wife were grilling out in their backyard when a mountain lion / cougar came out of the woods and was clearly observed by the officer and his wife. im totally blown away right now. there was a documentary i just saw on the history channel with all these people acting like they do not exist. as if its like bigfoot or something. when i was a child between 22-25 years ago my mother and i saw one run from the side of the road by my grandfathers farm in velma oklahoma. it was really cool but no one thought it was that big of a deal. two of my uncles have seen one and so has my cousin. i am sure that many many more people in velma have seen one. it is NOT a jaguar. it is a cougar. also known as puma panther and mountain lion.jaguars are bigger. they look like a female lion.. they have a bigger snout. cougars are more flat faced rounded heads... so what we saw was not a black jaguar. im freaked out to find out that this sighting is such a big deal. wikopedia says that cougars are extinct in texas and oklahoma.. that is also a bunch of crap. endangered yes, extinct no. just a few weeks ago my cousin and i saw tracks of a mountain lion on the banks of the red river. it was not a bob cat.. way too big... not a dog or coyote.. the tracks were round... not like k9 tracks where the toe is pointed. they were of a cat. obviously enough time has not been spent researching this animal. it was either a black cougar or maybe some hybrid that was bread with a jaguar, introducing the black gene into the animal. all i know for certain is the body structure is exactly like a cougar, not a jaguar! the person from choctaw is not crazy and he has not mistaken what he has seen. i would bet my life he saw the exact same breed of animal that i saw. if just minimal effort was made i am sure one will be captured... i think the problem is, most people dont know how rare it is... i didnt. i just knew that it was an endangered animal and a very rare color of the endangered cougar. i didnt nor did anyone else realize that there are people claiming that they do not exist. argh. this really ticks me off- Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at 18:03:28 (EDT)

The old cliche "Follow the Money" definitely applies when it comes to endangered species such as Mountain lions / Cougars. If lions or cougars are legitimized by confirmed sightings $$$$ Millions of dollars of new construction could potentially be halted or deterred based on lawsuits from the animal rights folks for endangered species.Tax monies would dry up or be reduced so there are many variables involved in the "Confirmation" of animals. If you get a chance please read the book " Beast in the Garden"- Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 10:50:13 (EDT)

In mammals there have always been "Albinos and Melanism" so to say that black cougars don't or can't exist is being gullible at best. We at the www.ohiomountainlionwatch.wetpaint.com took over 100 credible cougar / mountain lion reports last year and numerous reports were of black cougars. Reports from park rangers, fire fighters, animal rescue personnel and common citizens with no axe to grind with anyone. No hidden agendas etc. And " Yes" the authorities play most of them down with excuses that the person actually mistook the "big cat" seen as a deer or dog which in our opinion is irresponsible on their part. The state of Michigan denied for 50 years that they had cougars. Today they have signs posted in their Parks stating for people to be cautious and that they could be in cougar habitat.- Friday, May 22, 2009 at 10:18:27 (EDT)

I have to disagree. The black cat is well beyond the deer. That cat will be smaller in the picture because of that. Things look smaller and smaller the further away they are. Now if you use a paint program and cut the black cat out of the picture and place it on the deer (bringing it forward without enlarging it) the black cat is the size of a very very large cat. Which means with ANY enlargement the cat would be too large to be a house cat. House cats just don't get that big, feral or not.- Friday, May 15, 2009 at 03:55:30 (EDT)

First, I would like to know what type of deer that is. If it is a White Tailed Deer, as is common in Alabama, the cat is quite possibly a house cat, for lack of better terminology. It must be understood that when a feral cat colony develops, The cats tend to get progressively bigger with generations. This is at the very least a very large black feral cat. But without knowing for sure the species of deer, I hesitate to say that it is not a panther. It is just unlikely that that cat is a panther.- Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 04:36:05 (EDT)

A man by the name of JOHN VINROOT who is trained in identifying wild animals has confirmed a WILD COUGAR in LAND BETWEEN the LAKE NATIONAL RECREATION AREA! A 170,000 acre area in southwest KENTUCKY and northwest Tennessee. There has been 28 trail cameras set up to confirm COUGAR in this preserve. The EASTERN COUGAR NETWORK and JOHN VINROOT say their are prabably around 50-75 WILD COUGAR in the GREAT SMOKEY MTS NATIONAL PARK. According to John vinroot a WILD COUGAR was confirmed there in the late 1970s, but the DNR denied it. The truth is the DNR knows there is a WILD POPULAION OF COUGAR IN TENNESSEE, but they are afraid to admit it in fear of loosing money from tourism, hiking, camping etc. Their have been claw marks on cows, and horses, and tracks found in the state.Several college professors who teach wildlife classes have seen Cougar over the years around the state. If you are in the State of AL and have your sites on one of these black panthers... better bury him deep or make sure there is a tranquilizer in that piece. I might be wrong, but these animals were first sited in 1860 by a naturalist. It is not sure if they are a species jaguar or descendants of animals brought over here and accidentally freed by Europeans or settlers and they bred. Who knows. Even a zoologist at the B'ham Zoo admits their existence and said no one can get dna to sample. They are smaller than Central American jaguar, she did say that is certain. For some reason, if they are all jaguar, they are a strain that are all black. There maybe a very old law on the Alabama books that protect these cats. Good video. I have heard about them all my life. The scream like a woman. My mom and I saw a kitten/cub on Monte Sano Mountain Spring Break of 1978. We were hiking the trails and gotten off the beaten path. It was the size of a medium/large dog, rounded ears, long tail & long body. Not like any house cat. It was young and it was big! And it was playing in the clearing with a moth or a butterfly like a kitten. When it saw us, it just stared at us with these glowing yellow/green eyes and they walked behind a bush to disappear. My mother turned and took off for the trail as fast as she could saying "let's go!" I wanted to hang around and go after the cat. Then my mom said, "You and I both know that was no ordinary house cat, it is a kitten and it's mother is watching us! She is BIG!...." My mom was raised on a farm. Hiked & wandered woods all her life. She had heard about them, but it was the first time she had seen one.- Wednesday, April 08, 2009 at 09:16:22 (EDT)

I agree COUGAR could also live in OHIO especially southeastern OHIO. It is belived the most likely states that have a REMENANT COUGAR POPULAION are VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA,and PENNSYLVANIA. I think any place in the APPALACIAN MTS. could have REMENANT COUAGAR the DNR in Shenandoah NP belive WILD COUGAR now live in the park, of course they have always lived their.Hundreds of people in and around the GREAT SMOKEY MOUNTANS NP have reported cougar DNR will not admit they are afraid if people here this they will not hunt, fish, camp, or hike in that area, and they will loose money. There are many ways reasons people see cougar in the east. THEY ARE-pets are released/escape, WILD COUGAR are moving into the east from the west.and THERE IS A REMENENT WILD POPULATION OF COUGAR IN THE EAST THAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN HERE.It is not either or all of these are reasons people see cougar in the east. I am moving to the MURRAY Kentucky area in 6 months. There are dozens of credible cougar sightings in southwest kentucky, maybe I will be one of the lucky ones to see one.- Tuesday, April 07, 2009 at 14:54:04 (EDT)

It doesn't matter if they are or some of the cougars are released pets. I guess we don't have any deer either since most are the offspring of transplanted deer. Bottom line is it doesn't matter if the wild cougar you see was once in a cage. Who really cares why the cougar is running wild. And when people report cougars it is pretty rare for then to report that the cougar they saw was having sex. Never seen that mentioned, so why is that subject always brought up by the government employees.- Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 03:15:13 (EDT)

I agree with you Ryan with no disrespect to the Alabama Game Warden. The DNR in Michigan denied for 50 years that there were no cougar/ mountain lions in their state until one of their park officials was stalked by one in the woods. Subsequent to that occurrence along with hundreds of other signs and sightings by credible witnesses ie Law Enforcement, Park Rangers, ie visual sightings, scat, scrapes, and unique deer kills. Michigan currently has signs posted in their state parks advising visitors of possible cougar habitat.I live in southwest Ohio and belong to a animal tracking group that has been seeing signs of cougar/ mountain lions for over 20 years. The DNR in Ohio denies their existence as well.I have a relative that lives next to a Game Warden that had a cougar cross in front of his vehicle in southwest Ohio. He mentioned it to my relative off the record and stated that "cougar are here but the DNR doesn't know for sure how many." I think there could easily still be a wild remnant population of cougar in the eastern and soutern U.S. The dnr do not know what is out there they have been wrong over 100 times on other species. There are over 100 species that the dnr has said is extinct AND A FEW YEARS LATER SOMEONE ENDES UP REDISCOVERING THEM such as the woodpecker in Arkansas. There could even be FLORIDA PANTHER in parts of the south other than Florida, AND THE DNR WOULD NOT KNOW!The dnr says there are know bear in west kentucky/tennessee but recently some wild BLACK BEAR have been confirmed. There is no differnce in east/west KY/TN to a bear it is all connected ANIMALS DO NOT OBEYED BY THE DNR BOUNDRYS!- Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 10:49:45 (EDT)

THEERE ARE NOT EVEN THAT MANY WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST IN ALABAMA THEERE ARE ONLY A FEW PER 3 OR 4 COUNTIES THEY COULD NOT KNOW EVERY ANIMAL THAT IS OUT THEIR. THERE ARE 23 MILLION ACRES OF FOREST IN ALABAMA AND ONLY A FEW GAME WARDENS AND BIOLOGIST AROUND THERY DO NOT KNOW EVERY ANIMAL THAT IS IN 23 MILLION ACRES OF FOREST THAT IS IMPOSSIBLE THEY NEED TO LISTEN TO THE MILLIONS OF HUNTERS AND OUTDOORSMEN WHO ARE IN EVERY CORNER OF THE STATE THEY KNOW WHAT IS OUT THERE MORE THEN A FEW DOZEN GAME WARDENS AND BIOLOGIST.- Friday, March 27, 2009 at 16:59:00 (EDT)

Look, my husband is the head Game Warden of the state of Alabama... while is is the chief enforcement officer, he is also a wildlife biologist by academic training. He tells me that there IS NO BREEDING POPULATION of black OR normal-colored cougars/mountain lions/panthers/painters/whatever in Alabama! I think he knows what he is talking about. He doesnt deny folks occasionally SEE them, but the ALDCNR Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division's intrepid game wardens and wildlife biologists CANNOT find evidence of a breeding population which MEANS they are illegally released pets. If you want to call him and talk to the Chief Game Warden of Alabama personally, email me privately and I'll give you his personal desk or our home phone # for goodness sake! I liked your black cat picture. Probably 10-15 years ago, Lamar Marshal of Wild South was called out to someone's farm in Lawrence County Alabama regarding a large black cat sighting. It looked like at was about 6 feet in full stride, then it crossed 20 yards in front of me. My neighbor has also seen it. She had about 90 rabbits and they all dissapeared. One night the dogs where barking and she looked outside and there was a big black cat carryin a rabbit off in it's mouth.- Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at 17:17:11 (EST)

Last year 2008, First week in March I saw not one but two Black panthers, same time together. One very large the other about half the size. Yes I say black Panthers because one black off strain cougar is super rare. For 30 Min. I watched them while I fumbeled with my wifes dead battery camera. I did manage to get one long range shot not of the cats but after putting this on my computer enlarged it enough to see a man standing in the woods on top of the hill what seemed to me he was waiting for the cats to return to him. I can't let my grand children play outside alone anymore.Game commision says they didn't bring them in and they don't exist. If they don't exist then if I shoot one how can I be punished? My Grand kids come first. Ps. got a new camera and box of shells.Havn't decided which I'd shoot first if I see the PANTHERS again. Depends, If the kids are around I quess. I had always heard that there may be Cougars in my area of South Mississippi and there have been sightings at Stennis Space Center of a large "cat-like" creature that may be a cougar. To add to that, this weekend (Saturday) we were walking one of the trails in our five acres and ran across a print. At first we were thinking black bear, but after taking pictures and comparing to bear and cougar, it is clearly a cougar. The spread of the print is about 5 1/2 inches, too large for a bobcat. There is no doubt in my mind, regardless of wildlife and fisheries protestations to the contrary, that cougars are alive and well in this area. If you would like me to send you a picture of the print, email me and I will send. Thanks- Monday, February 23, 2009 at 13:22:41 (EST)

In Dec., 09, I along with a friend clearly saw a long tail, black cat when we stopped at the intersection of Marengo County Roads 53 & 30. County Road 53 runs between Lamison and Thomaston, AL. and is commonly called the Whitehall Road. The cat stepped out in the road (County Road 30), stopped and looked at us from a distance of approximately 50 yards. After the cat crossed the road and disappeared into the woods, we looked at each other in amazement and both acknowledged what we had observed. It has been a conversation piece since that time.- Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 13:52:26 (EST)

Malinda, cougars don't put their prey in trees so the cat that did that would have to be an escaped African leopard, which isn't unheard of. With regard to the deer in the video. It might appear to be stupid behavior but it is not and it is typical. To make a kill a big cat has to get close. As long as the deer can see and keep track of the cat the deer is safe. By standing his ground while the cat crosses the food plot the deer can keep track of the cat, not entice the cat to chase by running away, get a better idea of where the big predator is going and what it is likely to do next. You can bet your bottom dollar that as soon as the cat entered the far side of the food plot that the deer vacated the premises.- Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 09:27:02 (EST)

We have seen this EXACT same creature in central MS. We have 86 acres and about a 3 acrea pond in a hollow. Well, the cat put a fawn it had killed up in the tree! I watched it at dusk one evening jump a fence, hit the middle of the dirt road in one leap and was gone! The tail is as long as the cat! Not to mention the "screaming" this thing did at night. The coon hunting dogs had enough sense NOT to get out from under the truck! I will say that the deer in your video is awfully brave or stupid to linger around this bad boy.- Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at 10:59:25 (EST)

There were three recent sightings of a cougar near Natchez, MS late last year. And, there have been numerous other sightings of cougars elsewhere throughout the SE states including two separate sightings in North Louisiana where the big cats were photographed by trail cameras. These sightings along with many others throughout the nation strongly suggest that cougars are definitely extending their range east of the Mississippi River. I lived in Billings, MT for 3.5 years from 2002 to 2006 and actually saw two cougars there. It is likely that it was the same cat that my sons and I saw on both occasions because both sightings were less than one mile from each other. Everyone knows that cougars are known to exist in Montana, but if you look at the range maps, they are not supposed to live near Billings which is in south central portion of the state. My point is that although cougars are seen in and around Billings at all times of the year, they are not supposed to be there according to the latest range maps. But, they quite obviously are living in and around Billings. I firmly believe that there are a few of them that exist throughout the SE and that these populations are expanding.- Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 10:58:53 (EST)

I know for a fact that there are Cougar's and at least one Black Panther in and around our area southwest of Woodward. My father saw a cougar on his morning walk stalking a turkey. He was glad it was a younger cat and not too hungry. My cousin saw the Black Panter on Hwy 60 west of Vici. It just sat there on the side of the road and watched her drive by. Another friend has seen the Black Panther at her ranch not far from the other site of the Black Panther. I will no longer take walks out into the fields and pastures. My daughter lives out there and spoted a large cougar in her back yard just looking at the house. They have seen many tracks out there too. One late afternoon just as we were turning into the driveway a not full grown cougar rain across the road from the east to the west and we were able to get a good look at it. Nope, no more long walks in the country for me. I am a believer even if the warden doesn't agree.- Friday, February 13, 2009 at 01:23:21 (EST)

This is a good video. The most interesting fact here is not so much the video of the cat. It is the video of the deer's attention to the cat. If a 12 pound house walked 40 yards behind a deer it would not attract enough interest with the many natural noises of the woods to grant a deers and especially a large bucks attention. Whatever it was it was large enough and make enough noise walking through the forest to attract the deers attention which is very important in detemining authenticity of the video. The cat does look larger than a house cat using the tree as a point of reference, but you should advice an expert in video to determine the size of the animal using the tree as a point of reference.- Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 15:35:42 (EST)

A few years ago i was hunting and a few hundred yards away a saw a huge animal thought to be a doe put as a put my scope on it i noticed that it was black and had a very long tail biggest cat i ever seen had to be at least 75 lbs. a week later a friend of mine who is in his 40's and been hunting his entire life made the same mistake saying he saw what he thought to be a small doe turned out to be this huge cat only a mile or two from where i had saw it. i do believe there are black panthers in the south.- Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 07:33:36 (EST)

THIS MORNING ON MY WAY TO WORK A LARGE CAT CROSSED MY PATH ON 2208, HALF WAY BETWEEN JEFFERSON AND HARLETON. I SAW A RED TINT TO THE EYES, INSTEAD OF THE WHITE REFLECTION OF DEER. COMING UPON IT I THOUGHT IT WAS A LARGE DOG, BUT THIS WAS INDEFINITELY A CAT.HUGE ANIMAL. IT WASN'T RUNNING ACROSS, JUST SAUNTERING, SO I GOT TO SEE IT UP CLOSE. AMAZING! THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY, IT BEING A FULL MOON AND ALL. GLAD IT WAS, IT ALLOWED ME TO SEE IT. SPOKE TO A FELLOW AT THE GAS STATION, AND HE SAID THEY HEARD ONE THE PAST WEEKEND FISHING AT LAKE DEERWOOD. SO, BE ON THE LOOKOUT EAST TX!- Friday, December 12, 2008 at 09:00:55 (EST)

This is like the cat I saw crossing the road. I drive a school bus and just made a morning pick up at 6:30 and pulled the bus back onto Hwy. 360 near Hwy. 25 north to Pickwick. This animal was black. He or she was slowly moving across the road. The tail was as long as the body and the ears lay low. I could see the red pigment in the under coat as it move across the road. On the afternoon route a young 11 year old stated "Guess was we saw this weekend? , A Panther." Two days later the same crossing in the road and at the same time within 2 min. of the last. I spoke to the wildlife officer and he acted as it was funny to see such an animal in this part of the world. I pick up a child who walks from a cabin on the lake trough the woods about 100 yards from the crossing. On the second crossing, there were cars who flashed there lights at me. As to say did you see that!- Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at 22:34:02 (EST)

I live in Northern Louisiana, not far from Bossier City. I myself have seen the Black Panther in the area. I read many of the comments and I have something to say to the lady that says leave them alone. I would like to know if she would like to find one of her children mauled by this thing. I wouldn't and I'm sure I can say she wouldn't either. So, you can bet your sweet ass that if I am out hunting and see it .... it will DIE!! I have family that hunts everyday of deer season here...And I'm sure they would kill it if it came up on them. Panthers aren't a wild animal you would want to mess with. I know they don't stay long where they stop, but that isn't the point. The point is, is that they are a dangerous animal and will kill if need be...so all you hunters out there be very careful.- Thursday, December 04, 2008 at 22:21:20 (EST)

November 27 th 2008. I checked my cattle and realized one calf a month old was missing. After searching the bottom land of my ranch, I noticed buzzards. I went to point of buzzards roosting in trees and and searched for calf. Finally I saw a food pertruding from under brush. There I found my month old clf half eaten and covered up with leaves. The land is dry in this area now and could not see any trcks but know it is a cougar kill as I have seen this cougar several times over the years and even had the surpriise of seeing to half grown cubs two years ago. I need tips on trapping this cougar. I can not afford to loose calves. My neighbor has lost 2 calves to her in last three years.- Friday, November 28, 2008 at 12:08:29 (EST)

Mike, You should move your deer stand to our property which is also in Greenwell Spring, LA. Saturday night we saw a cougar in our yard. Our head lights caught him crossing our driveway and he froze for about 20 seconds. It was long enough for my husband and I to be completly freaked out and come to the realization that their was a huge cougar in front of us. I had no idea cougars lived in Louisiana. I also spoke to a friend down the street and they have seen large tracks around their pond. We have also have been loosing a duck about every other night out of our pond. Is their anything we can do to scare him off?- Monday, October 20, 2008 at 11:14:45 (EDT)

My house sets about 100yrd from a creek and it is heavily wooded. I was just glancing out the back window when I saw it. At first I thought it was my dog which is a 120#black Akita/rotty mix. But he was in the house. I only saw it for a couple seconds. But it moved like a cat through the brush before vanishing out of sight into the woods. My first thought was a black panther. Hi everyone, I am from Montgomery and have seen several of these big cats. In fact I could take you somewhere that you could see them now about 1 hr from town, but due to the fact that you would probably kill them, I will keep them to myself. They are not just killing machines though, in fact, they can help deer populations. Before you think that I am crazy, I am an ecologists and I study invasive species effects on existing communities. The panther/cougars feed primarily on other small animals that the deer compete with for food. This eliminates much of the competition for high protein meals for the deer, such as acorns and soy. The deer that they do feed on are usually older or injured deer that carry deleterious genetic mutations. The elimination of these deer is also beneficial to the population. So, think before you shoot one of these guys. I have been on the ground within 20 feet of them and it is pretty cool. Although, I have never seen a black one, I am glad that they are making a return to central Alabama.- Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at 03:12:59 (EDT)

Couple of points. The number of cougars that have ever attacked people is very very low. You need to much more concerned with humans instead of cougars. Florida has a lot more cougar than we do and they have never had an attack. The danger posed by cougars is not nearly what most people think it is. Chicken bones kill more people than cougars every year. The fine for killing a cougar in Louisiana is 100,000 dollars. So you better think twice before you take such drastic action. I find it sad when people are so scared of wild animals that they want them to be eradicated. Don't people still take vacations to the west and Africa etc just so they can experience a little wildness? I for one hope for their return and look forward to seeing the first one in the wild. I think it would be awesome to be sitting in my deer stand and have one come walking by.- Monday, October 13, 2008 at 16:52:58 (EDT)

I know there are panthers in La. I saw one cross in front of my truck while going to my drilling rig early one morning. My son saw one behind our house in a cutover while deer hunting. Also, about 45 people heard one early in the morning at our hunting camp. The following weekend, at the deer camp, a cousin killed a deer. When he went in search of the deer, it had been dragged about 25 yards away. It's testicles and guts had been eaten on. The next day, another cousin was leaving the woods and saw a panther cross the trail behand him. He did not know about the deer that had been eaten on.... there are panthers in La.- Tuesday, October 07, 2008 at 13:58:14 (EDT)

There are tons of cougar sightings throughout the U.S. every year. Many are proven to be house cats because people misjudge distance all the time. Black phase cougars DO exist. They call them "melanistic", I may have misspelled that a bit. It is a fancy word for black basically meaning no pigmentation coloring. The video seems a little blurry but the body mechanics show a larger cat than a house cat. It's obvious in the way it runs. You can tell by watching how it handles it's own wait as it bounded through the weeds. I would say you have captured a melanistic cougar on film. If you know any trappers they can try to track the animal. Also look around the area for paw prints. Good luck. In Illinois we can shoot them but every state has different laws so I would check your local laws 1st. I have seen cats like this in Illinois as well and have been called by people wanting them mounted since I am also a taxidermist. I have had a shot at one myself but it was about 100 yards away. If you want to find out how fast they can run just scare it and watch how fast they run and disappear. A mature whitetail is slow compared to one of these big cats. Good Luck with your videos. I wAtched the video 2 times and noted the way the tail was curled @ the tip. I have several cats and yheir tails never curl like that. Also the body is configured larger than a cats.I have heard a panther scream before on my grand parents property.Every now and then me and my weimerainer (lab sized dog) and my two shelties will be out in the pasture and the dogs will totally freak. The neighbors have seen a large black cat raiding their garbage and walking through their yard. one day they were feeding our horses and saw a tree swaying there was no breeze and in the top of the tree was a huge black cat. By the time he got his gun the cat was gone. All of the cat sightings have been of a giant black cat with a curled tail. "I think its possible for big cats to live and hide in Alabama. That video looks like the real deal. One thing I did notice is the rack on the deer. The 1st shot of the deer shows the rack almost touches at the tips and another shot of the deer shows a bit wider tip to tip spread. I guess its possible there were 2 bucks on the field but the video never shows both. Whats up with that? jim selma, al. USA - Monday, February 18, 2008 at 21:16:33 (EST)" Jim, It is two different deer. The first one was already in the field when the video began. The second came into the field after the cat arrived. It looks to me like he is trying to put distance between himself and the cat. Bucks are not like does; they will try to get away without bringing attention to themselves. If the second deer was a doe she would have been running and making all kinds of noise.- Monday, June 23, 2008 at 00:10:53 (EDT)

"That video looks retarded. Anyone who honestly can't tell that's a house cat is either totally nuts or just blinded by their pointless desire to believe in something mystical or see something unique...I can see how black panthers would fit nicely into that type of delusion. Matt Trailer Selma , AL USA - Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 13:01:17 (EDT)" Matt, You're not to good at range estimation and coordinating the size of an abject to the estimated range, are you? Obviously you aren't. The cat in the picture is a minimum of 100 yards from the first deer shown and it is still as large as a housecat. Based on a distance of 100 yards the cat in the picture weighs in the neighborhood of 100 pounds and is a minimun of 6 feet long, including the tail. It seems to me you're the one who doesn't have the ability to "think outside the box."- Monday, June 23, 2008 at 00:00:57 (EDT)

My grandparents lived between Eucutta and Shubuta in Mississippi. One day while we were feeding the pigs there was a huge black cat up in a cedar tree near us. My grandfather shot it with a 20 gauge, and the cat jumped out of the tree about 10 yards in front of us. This BLACK CAT was at least 6 feet long with tail and looked to weigh about 130 - 150 pounds. It took off like it was not even hurt. I have heard that Black Panthers don't exist, or is it that they do not exist in Mississippi; but wheter it is a misnomer or not my country relatives called them Black Panthers. I have seen bobcats before. This was no Bobcat! If any one is familiar with the Petal Panthers mascot, it is a black panther, long, sleek and muscular. Similar to a cheetah, but black and about 30 to 50 pounds of muscle added. Since that time , I was 12, I have seen tracks and HEARD the blood curdling screeching roar of a female Black Panther protecting its kittens from wild dogs or coyotes. Here in Petal I once lived near the Leaf River. I could hear them and see their track near and on the sand bars. So, whatever anyone wants to call them, they are BLACK and big. I will continue to call them Black Panthers. I am glad that this video was captured, even though it was at a distance, I could tell that it looked exactly like what I saw myself.- Sunday, June 22, 2008 at 20:48:57 (EDT)

Today - 8:45 am. Driving North out of Ruleville on Hwy49W north an animal in a cotton field caught my eye on the West side of he highway. Stopping and turning around and (to the disgust of my wife) I got out of the car and not 40 yds. from me were 2 catlike creatures. At first the ears and profile gave it away, but when one stood up to move to the woods my jaw hit the highway. I have been hoping to see something like this my whole life - I thought it would take a lifetime - but there it was. The biggest damn thing I have ever seen, and not just one, but two. I have hunted and trapped in Alabama for 40 years and I can tell you that is no house cat. Also, in 1987 a friend and I were hunting quail and we came out of the woods into a large pasture with a pond in the middle of it. We both saw a large black cat about 3 feet long with a 3 foot tail. It ran for cover but we were able to watch if for about 30 seconds. I have talked with several respected outdoorsmen who have also seen the black cats over the years. This animal exists , whether it is a black panther or not I do not know. It may be another species or a subspecies of another big cat. Most hunters will not shoot one because of the fine if caught. I have been a Surveyor my whole life. I have spent my life wandering around the woods of Louisiana,Mississippi and Texas. I have personally seen 3 mountain lions. One black panther outside of Jasper Texas. One mountain lion North of Oil City, Louisiana (North of Shreveport). One in Vernon Parish around the South end of Toledo Bend Lake. The Vernon parish sighting involved several survey crews. We found his tracks and scat everywhere. Every man in the crew carried a loaded pistol. Finally, early one morning we spotted him on an old logging road. Recently, on my deer lease in South Rapides Parish, I spotted those same familiar tracks. Sure makes me wonder each morning when I head out to my stand.- Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at 23:53:04 (EDT)

Maybe two years ago a Bibb Co news paper (I think Centerville AL) had a clear picture taken at night by a game camera put up by land owner who had seen a couger on his place. Several weeks later a State park ranger from TannerHill State Park between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham reported seening a couger running deer in the park. From time to time there are reported siteings by hunters. If you look up Alabama Mountian lions on internet there are several pictures of lions killed, one in Tuscaloosa co. in the 50's. NE Alabama has many siteings. Baldwin Co had a den with cubs in it found by a Dept of Conservation Officer last year or so. Don't know whats in the woods or rivers.- Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 23:31:57 (EDT)

You can tell that cat is big because it crosses that gap that appears to be a standard 12 foot wide four wheeler trail in two strides The person who was talking about Tigers for tomorrow, I have worked their and they have "scratchings" and even a fresh kill brought outside the perimeter fence when their female cougars are in heat. One was supposedly seen at Stennis Space Center this past weekend. It was captured on video but the quality was not very good. Game people think it was a large Bobcat. The person who saw it swears it was a Cougar. I saw the video, you could never make out a tail but the legs were long and it appeared to be too big for a Bobcat. The black cat is much to big to be a house cat. The black cat is well beyond the deer but is still the size of a house cat when you take direct measurements off of the photo. In a photo things get smaller the further away they are so without question the black cat is way too large to be a house cat.- Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 03:31:43 (EDT)

That video looks retarded. Anyone who honestly can't tell that's a house cat is either totally nuts or just blinded by their pointless desire to believe in something mystical or see something unique...I can see how black panthers would fit nicely into that type of delusion.- Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 13:01:17 (EDT)

I am a contract surveyor and our crew stumbled onto a cougar south of Lexington MS this afternoon. One crew member was alone and about 2500 feet in front of us. He was cutting brush when he saw the cougar about 100 feet in front of him. The cougar charged at half speed and chased him for a few hundred yards before stopping. Our assumption is he was eating and tried to scare off a competitor. We left the area for a couple hours then went back. We found tracks, droppings, and a spot that appeared to have had a large prey drug through the brush. Anyone with knowledge of why the cougar charged and then stopped would be appreciated. Also I have photos of a 240 pound cougar that was killed in my home state of Kentucky three weeks ago. It was struck by a car and is the biggest cat I have ever seen.- Monday, April 14, 2008 at 20:08:57 (EDT)

"There is no BLACK "big cat" native to North America"

SO... a video is taken of an illegally-released a pet black jaguar in Alabama... and your point is? Look, this hoopla is hilarious. (1) There is no BLACK "big cat" native to North America, but even if it was a rare melanistic Florida Panther-Mountain Lion-Cougar-Painter(whatever)... (2) there is NOT a wild and breeding population of these -- or any other large cat -- in Alabama! And to imply that the AL DCNR is hiding something, avoiding the issue, ignoring it, etc. is simply ridiculous. Their biologists and Conservation Enforcement Officers (aka Game Wardens) would LOVE to find proof of a breeding population. They do not and never have denied that occasionally there will be a big cat in the woods, but it is ALWAYS proven to be an illegally-released "pet". Just ask TIGERS FOR TOMORROW, up in North AL... they are a big cat rescue operation (I heard that they are working with legislators who are considering drafting a bill to outlaw private ownership of big cats in Alabama -- hope they are successful). And the AL DCNR guys think it's pretty funny that whenever "proof" is presented it is always folks who say "My brother's neighbor's friend saw a panther..." etc. etc. etc. How come these so-called "eyewitnesses" never come forward personally? Agents with the Alabama Dept. of Game and Fish seem to agree that people are seeing some large, dark cat. Perhaps it is a panther. A set of plaster casts from the tracks is the best evidence as proof. Photos can and have been taken and claimed to be from somewhere in Alabama. If it is proven that panthers do in fact reside in Alabama, certain federal grant money will possibly be forthcoming; but, the state may be mandated to match the federal fund. Alabama has enough financial problems. This may be why little effort is made to ascertain the animals existance! Just my thoughts- Saturday, April 05, 2008 at 23:02:03 (EDT)

other than the LA trail camera pictures which were definitely of a cougar, the other visual "evidence" is merely images of outsized and probably feral housecats. There is no doubt that cougars do exist in the eastern US, a Philadelphia news program having shown a video of one in Claymont Delaware a few years back, but a lot of the "reports" are from misidentification, viivid imagination, or just pure fantasy. the one "reporter" even describes huge claw marks in the cats tracks, and since the only cat that leaves claw marks in it's tracks is the cheetah, her "cougar tracks" were probably left by a Rottweiler. There are still a lot of open forests in the east and to assume that a secretive animal such as the cougar does not exist there is a more fanciful idea than believing that it does.- Monday, March 31, 2008 at 11:56:12 (EDT)

In September of 2002 I saw a mountain lion run across a portion of England Air Force Base ( now Alexandria Air Park) in Alexandria La. The cat was running from the business offices of a computer firm toward the old base housing. I'm from Southern Ca. and was to pay respects to my deceased father. Believe me it was Cougar! Later that week while up at my sister's house in Bagdad La. my nephew walked into the kitchen and said that a big dog was outside. My nephew was only 4 years old and the look in his eyes prompted me to walk outside. My sisters dogs were on the porch and as I walked off the porch they ran in front of me toward some bushes near the driveway. I could not see the cat but it growled very loud and was attempting to fight the dogs from the brush. I was only 15 feet from the brush and was fearful for my own life. I did not want to turn my back on the brush and yelled for my brother-in-law to bring out a shotgun. Unfortunately he never heard me. After a few minutes the cat ran off back toward the woods. I was able to see a flash of color but not the actual body of the cat. I believe the cat was going to take the child but the dogs kept it at bay and all three retreated to the safety of the porch. Although I have no proof of the above, I believe that it was not a cougar but another species of large cat.- Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 19:45:18 (EDT)

I think its possible for big cats to live and hide in Alabama. That video looks like the real deal. One thing I did notice is the rack on the deer. The black cat is entirely too big to be a house cat. In the video the black cat is further away than the deer. If you were to take a cutout of the cat and place it next to the deer it would be as large are larger than any house cat and that is without even taking into account the fact that the cat is further away and would actually be bigger in the video had it been as close as the deer.- Tuesday, February 05, 2008 at 02:35:03 (EST)

I'm a newcomer to the south and have been pretty fascinated by the whole black panther thing. The trail cam pics of the coug are pretty cool, but I'm very disappointed in the video. If everyone is so sure these exist, but the scientific community is in complete denial that such animal exists, then why doesn't someone post some of these pics and video they talk about in these comments. If the Black Panther is real, then please post some good pictures or video. There is enough high quality trail cams in the woods these days that someone has to have some pics to back up these stories. Trust me, I want to believe this animal is real, but all these stories with no pics or excuses of why they won't release the pics or videos is only pushing me and the rest of the skeptics further from believing all of you. The video on this site sure looks like a big housecat to me, and all these stories are starting to sound like a culmination of passed on tall tales. I have no doubt that cougars and mountain lions exist around here. But I have not seen anything that can back up anybody's story of the "black panther." Please I want to believe you guys, just post some of these trail cam pics everyone is talking about. This video is useless, why would they waste their time video taping the deer and never giving the camera a chance to focus on the cat, if it was something so unusual.- Monday, February 04, 2008 at 19:58:10 (EST)

In 1990 I saw a tan southern cougar/fla panther cross the road less than 100 yards from me in Green Co., MS. In 1996 I saw another tan cat cross a grass patch at 60 yards while deer hunting in east central MS. In 2006 I saw the "black" panther. It was black, or it was the deepest charcoal gray I've ever seen on an animal. It had a deep bluish sheen. It was slick and shiny. Absolutely beautiful. It crossed a pipeline at 150 yards while deer hunting in east central MS. I watched it for approx. 10-15 seconds through a 10X scope, which provides a very clear view. The experts can say what they wish, but what I've seen is no bobcat. All these cats had long tails and were substanially larger than a bobcat. I've shot many bobcats in my time and I didn't shoot these because I've heard they are protected. I didn't have a camera with me, but I now do and it's only a matter of time til I get a photo. The cat was back last year with 4 to 5 inch tracks on a sand road, but left when activity picked up in the woods early in deer season.- Monday, January 21, 2008 at 18:53:31 (EST)

For years I had hears reports of of panthers in the regional area but never payed much mind to it. Until yesterday.. I was looking out my window gazing away while doing the dishes and seen what I thought was my dog in our trash pile burning pit but realized that my son had the dog in his room. I went outside on the porch with my spot light to investigate. I had figured it was another dog being that it was the size of the family dog solid black in color. It was not yet dark outside just enough light to see that some type of animal was messing around. But as I shined the light on him it caught my eye that this was no dog. It was a cat. But no domestic cat could ever be that big, no-way.. It turned and looked directly at me, I was standing about 50 to 75 meters from it. This animal looked as if it had no care in the world I was there. It slowly walked awaw from the burn pit and headed towards the path to the back pasture and sat down to take a 2nd look at me. I turned to see the family dog had came out on the portch and spotted him. The panther got up and noticed the activity the dog was showing and cared less as it slowly got up from its resting spot and took a trot down the path to the far back pasture. I hope it returns tonight cause I will be ready with my camera... and...my shotgun.. I am convinced that they are in Texas now.- Thursday, January 17, 2008 at 08:26:26 (EST)

On the opening page "Proof of Cougars Return to Historical Range", its noted despite official extermination of cougars in the east, sightings never stopped & continue for over 100 years. You failed to mention, NOT only have events continued, but many included proof of their presence or documentation. Ghosts & other animals do NOT leave tracks or pictures of a cougar/mountain lion. Such material did NOT just begin in 1990s. That proof began back in the 1940s when Bruce S. Wright found & confirmed cougar tracks in New England & eastern Canada. Also playing a major role in the 40s was Herbert R. Sass, an early Mutual radio pioneer, who asked his listeners to send him infomation on any big cats they had seen in the east. The request ended in thousands of letters being sent to in from residents across the east. In 1964, we became involved with Cougars as a young Baltimore radio news reporter, which has led to a lifelong "love" affair with pumas & BLACK panthers, all flesh & blood mammals. Both South & Central America has BLACK pumas, leopards & jaguars. Why is it so impossible for North America NOT to have them?? A BLACK Jaguar was recently documented & filmed in northern Mexico, less that 50 miles from Texas. We'd like to hear from hunters who saw a cougar or black panther in the early to mid-1900s in any eastern state. Cougars & black panther confirmations began LONG be4 1990. They began a century ago & continue to this day. Send your reports to epuma@hardynet.com & we thank you in advance.- Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 08:56:08 (EST)

For 1st time in history, Monster Quest has gotten the attention of top-notch Minnesota & Oregon scientists, who are now pursuing the sasquatch mystery, since flesh & blood samples show this creature is a live being & not figments of inmagination. My family saw a black bear in a pecan tree in a person's front yard near Rosedale, MS after the droughts around 2001. I have pictures of that along with two bears on the levee in Gunnison, MS. It seems they were crossing over from Arkansas when the Mississippi River dropped so low.- Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 01:40:03 (EST)

I can agree with big black cats in the woods of Alabama. I hunt Hollins managment area and have for the last 20yrs have seen big black cats on more than one occasion.. the first time was the worst and it screwed up my hunting trip.. My dad had told me he had been seeing the black cats for several years. sometimes two within minutes of each other.. being young and doubtful i didnt agree nor disagree with him. on one of our trips to Hollins we were going to the top of Rebecca mountain, to hunt and I stopped in a boulder field that had a few overhangs and some good trees to put my stand. as i was waiting on daylight to fully emerge I kept feeling like something was watching me. I would turn and bust my flashlight in the direction of where i thought something was and never could see anything.. this went on till about 6am. I decided to go ahead and get me a cup of coffee and eat a biscuit and all of a sudden i got that feeling again and the hair was standing up on the back of my head. I was at the time standing on a ledge and it was daylight, my gun was lying against the rocks so i could get the coffee. I wheeled around and about 20 yards behind me was a big black cat.. I yelled and I think i scared him as much as he scared me.. I was freakin petrified.. almost crapped my pants .. he ran by me about 20yds away and jumped of the small ledge and was gone.. ruined my whole weekened.. couldnt be still and constantly looking over my shoulder.. That was years ago, I am 50 now and accept that they are there..(I always get in my tree stand now) Me and My father(74) still see these cats on occasion.. I do know what a big cat looks like and respect what they can possibly do to someone. This year i have put up cameras and take my video with me. I am going in Jan for an extended hunt up there for a few days so I hope I can get a pic to post.. I also own a serval cat which is from africa and stand 20" at the shoulder. the cats we see are about 30-36" long.. block head with smooth blunt end tail..tail looks almost as long as the body.. I was a doubter until I saw my first one..- Thursday, December 13, 2007 at 00:11:12 (EST)

The 'black cougar' in the second video clip was actually probably a jagarundi. A jagarundi sighting in the east would actually be more impressive than a cougar sighting. And if it wasn't a jagarundi, it was a cougar with melanism. But I don't think so, because the cat in the clip was walking like a jagarundi and had a long tail like one as well. We have a few jagarundis in Texas, and they may be extending their range much like the cougar is.- Saturday, December 08, 2007 at 23:47:23 (EST)

Cougars are also in the State of Maine.Instead of going to my tree stand ,I decide to watch this ridge from below looking up.Within 10 minutes-- this mountain lion is following the ridge line and never looked down to see me-maybe 80 yards or so.My safety came right off.Hunted Maine all my life and that was a first..this took place in 98..- Thursday, December 06, 2007 at 19:38:58 (EST)

I am currently a Mississippi State Student but grew up and still hunt in Southwestern Mississppi. When I was leaving the stand empty handed after a deer hunt in Claiborne county I saw the biggest "bobcat" I have ever seen cross the trail in front of me. It had no spots and a long tail and everyone thought I was crazy. We even came across a half eaten deer carcass that was covered under some brush. My dad thought that it had probably drowned in the flash flood we had on the property and maybe thats what happened. All I know is that I saw a very large cat and I find it very exciting that there is photographic evidence for their presence in Louisiana.- Saturday, December 01, 2007 at 20:18:11 (EST)

In 42 years of big cat studies, over 15,000 reports have been logged. 27% are of BLACK Panther type cats of 75 pounds or more. We have had dozens of pictures & videos sent in for identification by professional trackers & independent scientists, NO doubt exists that some evidence submitted are of native PUMA or BLACK Cougar. Cluster reports over extended time periods are excellent methods to detemine if specific regions have resident American Lions. Tell us about your sightings... Take a look at the tri-state map section on our website at www.easternpumaresearch.com to view regions of confirmed mountain lions since the early 1900s.- Sunday, November 25, 2007 at 09:44:11 (EST)

Since 1965, I have conducted hundreds of field studies and investigations on cougar & black panther(aka puma, jaguar, leopard) sightings across the mid-Atlantic States. Though evidence is elusive, at a few locations, we did manage to find tracks, unusual looking hair and/or scat. While DNA has NOT honestly provided data, many tracks have, in being identified by certified professional trackers as those of a cougar or mountain lion. If tracks are being confirmed as a cougar or mtn lion, yet witnesses including trained observers, are reporting & in some cases photgraphing 'COAL BLACK" felines, the animal must exist as shown in some pictures. They are NOT 100 pound housecats, as some illiogical scientists want the public to believe. A few BLACK PUMAS were photographed or killed in the 1900s in Central & South America. Since BLACK LEOPARDS & JAGUARS do survive in South & Central America, why do scientists make it so difficult to believe, they do NOT exist in North America? Pumas are the MOST adaptable large predator on earth. There is NO valid reason why WILD Black cougars could NOT travel from South American mountains into the United States?? To see a few confirmed black panthers visit our website at: www.easternpumaresearch.com then watch the History Channel on Wednesday night December 12th at 10PM for a documenatry on BLACK pumas or mountain lions in the eastern U.S.. Based on the negativity of mainstream scientists, I do surmise they will play down if NOT fully deny the presence of a large BLACK Feline predator in North America today, but stranger things have occurred in nature.- Sunday, November 25, 2007 at 09:16:19 (EST)

I lived in Northern Vermont for 5 years. I heard this huge cat at night for 2 years before I ever saw it. I was fortunate enough to see one 50 feet in front of my house before dawn. The huge black cat was bigger than any dog. I watched it as it stalked slowly across my front yard...It walked just like a panther, high front shoulders. It was completely black. It had tufts of hair on it's ears. The tail on this thing was longer than it's body and very thick. I opened my front door and actually yelled out to this huge cat...It didn't even look at me or acknowledge that I was there. It just kept stalking across the front yard and then into the dense forrest. I used to find it's paw prints in the mud and the snow quite often. They were huge prints, much bigger than a dog, and the claws were huge and left deep prints. Somewhere I do have pictures of the paw prints in the snow. The locals there didn't believe what I saw, they lived there whole life there and never saw one. Well, one day a couple locals were working on our land and they came running very fast back to the house...they finally saw this huge black panther looking cat. They no longer were in disbelief. These animals are really out there. I guess some people have to see one to believe. I feel very fortunate to have seen this one and I will never forget it. After I saw it, I made sure everytime I was outside alone all 3 of my dogs came outside with me.- Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 11:58:04 (EST)

Would someone please stop and get some physical evidence of one of these sightings. I find it hard to believe that of all of these sightings, no physical evidence has been brought fourth to substantiate these claims to wildlife officials. A footprint or some hair cant be that hard to come by. Anyway, I have worked part time with my father who is a forester here in Mississippi since I was 15. He has been a forester in Ms since 1980. Neither of us has ever seen any cougars, and we have been to some remote places. While hunting public land in ColdSprings Texas , just about 25 miles from my home in 2005, I saw what i guess was a panther, i pulled up in front of a gate to hunt at about 5am on a cold november morning , I got out of my truck and turned on my head light , while i was walking around the other side to get out my rifle and jumpsuit i noticed a pair of eyes at the edge of the woods laying in some grass, i started to walk closer when it stood up looking at me, it was about 15-17 inches tall and about 31 or so inches long, had big paws and its tail was almost as long as he was, solid black, with a large head, it looked at me for a few seconds and slowly turned into the woods and walked away, it was a very magnificent looking animal and i feel fortunate to have come within 15 feet of such an animal, it did make the hair on my neck stand up though. this happened in the Sam Houston National forest in case anyone is interested. No one believes me when i tell them my story, but i dont care. i know exactly what i saw. Last summer (2006), in august at about 2 am i was driving home on Hwy 151 going out towards Hico. I saw reflection of eyes in the middle of the road. i thought it was deer so i slowed down. It was acting strange. the eyes were moving back and forth as if it was confused where to go. as i got closer i realized it was not a deer. it was shorter and much too long. from head to tip of its tail, it was almost as long as the road was wide. then it began to walk towards the car. it got about 10 ft in front of the car, then it entered the opposite lane and began walking alongside the ditch. i knew it was a cougar, but i didnt believe what i was seeing. it was golden brown with a white belly that was sunken it like it was striving. the extra skin from the belly hung down low much like a female dog's when it has puppies. the tail was stretched straight out and was really long and thick. the stride was wide and its paws was huge. i watched it for about a minute or two and then it disappeared into the ditch. that night and the next day i looked for it and the tracks with my camera to get proof but the ground was too dry for it to have left any tracks!!- Thursday, October 25, 2007 at 13:02:31 (EDT)

I live in Slidell, LA but work on the Stennis Space Center in Hancock County, MS. Of course - Stennis has a huge wildlife area that is essentially part it's "buffer zone". Leaving work two days ago (16 October) ... a panther dashed across the road in front of my truck. It was a large animal - about twice as big as a Bobcat or larger. Very short straight haired and coat was more redish brown than it was buff. It was definitely not a Bobcat - this was a panther / cougar / mountain lion. Looked very healthy and moved quite gracefully!- Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 19:32:15 (EDT)

I saw a Large Black cat in the 65-80lb range during May of 2007. This was on a rancher friends property. I was stopped in the road watching a doe cross in front of me. After she crossed (about 15 yards from me) she headed towards an old phosphate pit. Just as she got to the edge of the enbankment the Cat popped up from behind a blown over oak tree and tore after the doe. I couldn't believe what I had seen and asked her renter who lives in the woods there. He said he was glad that I had seen it because he had seen it on 4 different occasions but couldn't believe his eyes. I live way out in the middle of the woods and I have consistently seen a panther in my yard in the last six months. I usually see him once a week he stays just outside of the clear part of my yard and under some trees. Before seeing him I have seen several around the house. I have also been told stories of one person the saw one on a regular basis and told game wardens that he saw one and they just laughed at him. He then shot and killed the one he had been seeing and dropped it in the middle of a large intersection with a note stapled on it saying that "I bet they want laugh at me now!" I also have pictures of one from one of my trail camera's if I can find them I will send to this sight if they want it.- Wednesday, August 01, 2007 at 06:28:58 (EDT)
