Yellowfin surgeonfish aka purple surgeonfish range from East Africa westward to Japan, Austrailia and the Gulf of California as well as all places inbetween.
They can be identified when they have a number of these characteristics. A yellow colored horizontal band over eye and yellow on two thirds of pectoral fin. Yellow and blue bands on dorsal and anal fins and a single spine on each side of caudal peduncle (base of the tail).
