Vanikoro Sweeper Pempheris vanicolensis

The Vanikoro Sweeper picture above was captured off the coast of Libya. An exotic to the Mediterranean Sea they entered probably via the Suez Canal and have experience rapid population growth ever since. Vanikoro Sweepers are native to the Indo-Pacific, Red Sea and eastern Africa to Samoa.

Vanikoro Sweeper fish are nocturnal in nature. During daytime hours they form huge schools hovering in caves. At night they move to open water and feeds on planktonic crustaceans and polychaets. Due to their small size they have no importance to commercial fisherman.
