The Gray Trigger Fish (Balistes capriscus) is the most common trigger fish caught offshore (usually)! It has a grayish brown body with irregular dark markings.
Trigger fish are considered excellent eating but are considered a pain in the butt by others including me. They are notorious for stealing your bait. They have small tough mouths that make it difficult to hook them. Often they are so thick around the rigs that it's difficult to get a bait down to the bottom to the snapper that your after.
Trigger fish get there name from their dorsal fin. There are two spines and you can "trigger" the big one to close by pressing the small one like a trigger. Trigger fish don't feed at night so night fishing is one way of fishing un-harassed.
