Lake Sturgeon are a large fish of ancient evolution decent. Their range is the Mississippi River the Great Lakes and the Hudson River. Once quite common in its range the Lake Sturgeon is now much reduced in number and distribution.
Sturgeon are very suseptable to overfishing because of their slow reproductive cycles. The females requires in excess of 20 years to mature, and then it spawning only occurs once every few years. But they can live to be half a century old so they do have good potential to eventually rebound from over fishing even if it does take a long time.
Lake Sturgeon have a large torpedo shaped body. There body is covered with five rows of bony plates, one on top and two rows along each side. The lake sturgeon has a sharp, cone shaped snout with four smooth barbels on its underside. The anal fin is closer to the tail fin than the dorsal. They can reach weights of over 300 pounds.
