Striped Mullet Mugil cephalus are filter feeders that can usuaully be seen swimming near the top of the water often in school eating the scum off of the water surface. Stiped mullet over whitish over all with distinct horizontal black stripes running down their sides. They have big eyes and blunt heads a small mouth a a black blotch at the base of the pectoral fins.
Striped Mullet live in both fresh and saltwater but are classified as an inshore saltwater fish. But don't let the classification fool you they are common in lakes and river far from the salty Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
They can reach sizes of more than 10 pounds but it is much more common to see them range from 1/2 pound to 2 pounds in size.
