Skipjack Herring reach lengths of 12-16 inches when fully grown. They prefer moderate to fast moving waters over sand and gravel in large rivers where they feed mainly on plankton but also will feed on small minnows. Skipjack Herring feed in large schools. They range throughout much of the Mississippi River Valley and have recently established thereselves in Lake Michigan.
