Scaled herring - Harengula jaguana

Pictured above is a scaled herring (Harengula jaguana) of the Western Atlantic. It ranges from as for north as New Jersey, down through Bermuda, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean all the way to southern Brazil.

It can be identified by it having no dark pigment on dorsal fin tip and no orange or red spot at opercle. The belly bows deeper than the back bows upward, large eyes and occurs in coastal waters over mud or sand bottoms frequently near brackish. They form dense schools.
