Rock soles live in the North Pacific Ocean around Alaska and area. They can live to be quite old. Sometimes as old as 20 years! They reach maturity in about 4-7 years.
Identification is via the supratemporal branch of lateral line with a posterior prolongation, that is scientific speak for the lateral line branches near the head and the upper branch does a little curl near the head. Lower normal branch of the lateral line mostly straight. Color yellowish brown or olive, sometimes numerous round lighter spots of varying size often with a few larger ones near the outer edges of the back and stomach.
