Rainbow Runner Picture and Information


The rainbow runner, Elagatis bipinnulata is a pelagic fish and is a member of the jack family. The species occurs in all the tropical and subtropical waters of the world. The rainbow runner is easily distinguished by its body shape, deeply forked tail and the brilliant colors. The species is a welcome game fish often caught but seldom targeted. Rainbow runners are usually caught by fisherman targeting other bluewater species such as tuna.

Rainbow runners often forms schools of variable sizes ranging from a few individuals to several hundred. They are highly migratory. Rainbow runner eat small fishes, cephalopods, shrimps and crabs. Rainbow runner are themselves preyed apon by larger predators such as some Dolphin species and occasionally by sea birds.
