Scorpaenids - Pontinus ?

Pontinus something

Many of the Scorpaenids are very difficult to ID in the field, and I was unable to come to a definitive conclusion on the species by examining this single picture. I consulted with a few experts who like wise contacted others in there field and the concensus was that it is impossible to make a definitive conclusion from the provided photograph.

There are many Atlantic species and a few of the genus Pontinus, Pontinus longispinis would be a strong candidate but it actually looks to me more like the red scorpionfish (Pontinus furcirhinus) from the pacific, this specimen was caught off the coast of Florida.

So we will leave it at a species of Pontinus or somekind of scorpionfish.
