Pirate Perch - Aphredoderus sayanus

pirate perch

This is an rarely seen fish known as the pirate perch. As this unusual fish matures, its anus migrates from near the tail and ends up below the pectoral fin. The reason for this is still unknown.

The Pirate perch lives in the eastern half of the USA. It feeds on aquatic insects, small crustaceans and baby fish all under cover of darkness. Very little is known about spawning habits. It is presumed that the eggs are incubated in the gill cavities just like cavefish do... cavefish also have the anus located on the throat.
