Longhorn Cowfish - Lactoria cornuta

The Longhorn Cowfish is one of the most well known of the boxfish among aquarium enthusiast. The Longhorn Cowfish gets its name from the fact that it has longer horns than most other species of cowfish. There are several color morphs of this species and they are sometimes called foxface puffer.

These horns are a defense mechanism make them difficult for predators to swallow. Their skin is also poisonous!

The longhorn cowfish must be dealt with carefully when in an aquarium enviroment. If overly harrassed or stressed, it can release the toxic substance, ostracitoxin which will poison the entire fish tank.

The Longhorn cowfish are found in the Indo-Pacific.
