This photograph was sent into me and its id was a long time coming. Just wasn't use to seeing these fish from this perspective.
Anyway with the help of visitors here I believe a positive ID can finally be given. The fish is Tylosurus crocodilus, commonly called by a number of different common names. In the USA this fish would be known as a houndfish or a big a$# needlefish.
But this one is the Australian variety. And over in that part of the country it is more commonly called Long tom or longtom. Also known by a whole host of common names such as gar, garfish, houndfish, needlefish, and Crocodile Longtom.
