Jewfish - Epinephelus itajara

jewfish

The Jewfish is the largest member of the Grouper family, capable of reaching over 800 pounds. Jewfish have a long lifespan as well. Ages of 30 to 50 years are common among these grouper. Since Jewfish get so large you might think they like the deep water, but actually they prefer the shallow bays over deep offshore reefs.

The Jewfish can be identified by its general grouper appearance and by counting the dorsal spines. Jewfish have 11 spines. Also all of the dorsal spines are short. These two characteristics make it easy to distinguish from other groupers. The body is brownish green with small irregular brown spots on the head and a rounded tail.

Oh, and I gues it might be worth mentioning the PC crowd has gotten the common name changed officially to Goliath Grouper. I refuse. Jewfish it is.
