Humpnose big-eye bream - Monotaxis grandoculis

Pictured above is an adult Humpnose Big-eye Bream. The adults can look like the one above or have the juvenile markings. The juvenile, actually all but the eldest ones have the same basic shape but have 3 thin verticle what bars on the back and sides and another on the back of the head.

The Humpnose Big-eye Bream inhabits the outer coral reefs adjacent sandy areas. They can be found in schools are individually. Interestingly the juveniles are usually solitary and the adults are more likely to form aggregates which is the opposite of most fish species.

Humpnose big-eye bream are nocturnal feeders and will eat mullusk, sea urchins, crabs sea squirts and sea cucumbers. This fish is ranges through out the Indo-West and Central Pacific West to East Africa, South to Australia, North to Japan and east to the Hawaiian Islands.
