The Humpback red snapper - Lutjanus gibbus ranges from the Red Sea and East Africa in the west, eastward to the Society and Line Islands with a northern boundary of southern Japan and a southern boundary of Northern Australia.

They are mainly residents of coral reefs sometimes in large schools. The growup in the grass beds when young then migrate toe the reefs as they grow larger. They feed on smaller fish and invertebrates such as shrimps, crabs, lobsters, stomatopods, cephalopods, echinoderms and ophiuroids.
