Graspy member of the grouper family, inhabit the waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean and can be found as far North in the Atlantic as North Carolina.
They can be recognized and differentiated from other groupers and hinds by the dark red spots that extend evenly across the entire body including the fins coupled with the presense of four spots, white or black, spaced along the top of the body just below dorsal fin. Like most groupers they feed primarily on smaller fish as adults and as juveniles Graspy feed mainly on shrimp.
Not as large as some groupers but the do reach as size large enough to support a fishery for them. The one pictured above is a small one.
