Elephantfish - Callorhinchus callorynchus



The elephantfish can be found of both the East and West coast of southern South America, New Zealand, southern Australia, southern Africa. This fish is most easily identified by the elongated snout which give it its common name... elephantfish. The tail is also pretty distinctive, called a heterocercal tail.

The family Callorhinchidae of which the elephantfish belongs is a member of the Class Holocephali best none as chimaeras. They occur over either sandy or muddy bottoms and are usually found in water from 30 to 400 feet deep.
