Doublespotted Queenfish - Scomberoides lysan

Doublespotted Queenfish

The doublespotted queenfish ranges from the Red Sea, down to East Africa then west to Hawaii and all places inbetween. The doublespotted queenfish is a member of the jack family although at a glance you might think that it was a mackerel.

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the doublespotted queenfish is the double series of spots above and below lateral line which you can faintly make out in the picture above.

The adults can be found in lagoons and reefs while the juveniles are found in shallow inshore and brackish waters. They are mostly solitary but not completely. Like most other jacks they feed mainly on small fish and some crustaceans.

Doublespotted queenfish are considered a gamefish. They have limited commercial value as well and are sometimes used as bait for big pelagics.
