The Cubbyu has a range extending from North Carolina south to Florida and throughout the Gulf of Mexico, South into South American water. Cubbyu are a structure loving fish usually found around rocky or coral reefs during the day then venturing out over sand to feed at night where they feed on invertebrates.
This species feeds predominately on benthic invertebrates from sandy habitats, including crabs, shrimp, and polychaetes (1).
This species are also labeled as Neopareques umbrosus by some scientist.
