The Cabezon has a marbled or mottled appearance of either brown, reddish, greenish, or bronze. They range in the eastern Pacific from Baja California up to Sitka, Alaska.
Cabezon can be found from shore out to over 300 feet deep. As they get older they tend to move deeper and deeper. Cabezon are relatively long lived fish reaching ages as old as 17 years and weights of up to 25 pounds.
Cabezon use their mottled coloration as camoflage while waiting on the ocean floor. They blend in well with the rocky uneven bottom and await their prey to venture to close to their mouth. Prey can be anything from small fish to crabs, lobsters, mollusk or even fish eggs.
