Buffalo Cowfish - Lactophrys trigonus

Buffalo Cowfish - Lactophrys trigonus

The Buffalo Cowfish is native of the Atlantic Ocean. Ranging from Massachusetts all the way to Brazil. And surprisingly also they can be found in the Mediterranean Sea!

The Buffalo Cowfish is sometimes bought and sold in the aquarium trade. Care must be taken when placing them with other fish however because when stressed cowfish can exude a toxin into the aquarium which is obviously not good for the other fish.

Their hexagonal plates are dark-edged, forming chain-like markings when somewhat young but the older they get the chain marking s and the white spots fade but gain an irregular dark reticulate pattern over the entire carapace.

The Buffalo Cowfish inhabits seagrass beds, coral rubble and offshore reefs down to about 150 feet deep. They feeds on a small nvertebrates such as mollusks, crustaceans, worms and sessile tunicates. You might not think by looking at it but in the Caribbean they are highly valued as a food fish.
