Bluefin Gurnard (Chelidonichthys kumu)

bluefin-gurnard

The bluefin gurnard {Chelidonichthys brachyoptera} is a member of the searobin family. They live in the the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean.

The bluefin gurnard looks pretty much like other sea robins in shape. The first three rays of the pectoral fins are separated to form what looks like feet or claws the they use to feel with while moving along the sea floor. They obviously get their name from the brightly colored fins. The body body contrast greatly with the wings/fins. The body is pink to red and blends well with the bottom and the bright fins can be tucked for concealment. They eat shellfish, crustaceans and worms.
