It is origanally from large rivers in eastern China. Bighead carp are an extremely invasive species that is threatening to invade the Great Lakes. Measures are being taken to try to prevent this, but they have already spread all up and down the Mississippi River and its tributaries. It is origanally from large rivers in eastern China.

Bighead carp have an enormous appetite. Eating up to 1/2 their body weight of food a day. And with a very short juv. (non-breeding period) their nickname in China is something to effect of Chinese water rabbits.

Bighead carp have the notable and unfortunate behaviour of jumping out of the water when startled. These fish get quite large and this behaviour can be very disasterous to recreational boaters. People have already been seriously injured when riding in a boat and getting hit in the head, neck and body by these flying carp!
