Atlantic Guitarfish - Rhinobatos lentiginosus


The Atlantic Guitarfish has many names, wedgefish, Atlantic shovelnose ray, white spotted guitarfish or freckled guitarfish. Atlantic guitarfish have a guitar shaped body which gives the fish its name. The snout is pointed with rounded tip. Body tapers into broad tail topped by two well developed dorsal fins of roughly equal size. Coloration varies considerably.

The prefer shallow waters usually on sandy bottoms often near grassbeds or near reefs. The Atlantic Guitarfish ranges from North Carolina to the Yucantan Peninsula in Mexico. Most common in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
