Fish Facts: Atlantic Bumper – Chloroscombrus chrysurus

The Atlantic bumper Chloroscombrus chrysurus, is a smallish fish in the family, Carangidae, the jack family. Atlantic bumper feed on smaller fish, cephalopods and even zooplankton.

The Atlantic bumper is best identified by its unique profile. Notice the bottom dips down much more than in any other jack. The lateral line is arched near the head and there is a distinct spot on the top of the fish just before the tail. Color is basically silver with some gold in the anal and caudal fins.

In the western Atlantic, Atlantic bumper is found from Massachusetts south to the coast of Uruguay. They also inhabit the eastern Atlantic from the coast of Mauritania south to Angola.
