The fish pictured above is an Atlantic Bonito (Sarda sarda) commonly just called Bonito for short! There is a huge amount of confusion surrounding this fishes common name. False Albacore/Little Tunny is another fish that is also commonly called bonito especially along the Gulf Coast.
I would bet you a million dollars that if you were at the dock at Venice, Louisiana and said you caught a bonito that ever single person there would think that you had caught a Little Tunny, which are called bonito there! Very confusing when discussing BONITO anywhere as you have to take extra precautions to make sure you are referring to the same fish.
Sarda sarda are a member of the tuna family. They range in the Eastern Atlantic from the British Isles during the summer down to the Cape of Good Hope. In the Western Atlantic they range from Novia Scotia all the way down to Argentina. They are fairly rare in the Gulf of Mexico however.
Atlantic Bonito feed on smaller fish, shrimp and squids. They reach sizes of up to about 20 pounds.
