Jew fish are the largest members of the grouper family (~+800lbs) and like you would expect from a grouper they love structure such as rock outcroppings, ledges, wrecks, jetties, and other such structure. Despite the jewfishes large size they prefer much shallower water than their other large relatives.
Jewfish are occasionally caught by bottom fishermen but they are a protected species and must be released unharmed. Jewfish can easily be identified by there dorsal fin which is different than any other grouper. The first part of the dorsal fin is of a fairly consistent height is not as tall as most other groupers dorsal fin. Examine a few online pictures of jewfish and other groupers and you will see what I mean.
