I only get a few gobbles in the mornings. Then nuthin, usually....
I managed to roost a Tom last night, but I knew he had a hen with him. I snuck in waaaaaay early and set up between them and the clear cut, thinking they would head that way. He gobbled once, then I heard them fly down, get together and walk right out of the woods towards my truck. That's my luck.
Then, not realizing I had set up directly under 3 more turkeys, when I stood to have a look around they blew out of the tree tops above me, out into the clear cut. No idea of whether any were toms.
So I sat dejeced and got a gobble from across the creek, unprovoked. I answered, he answered. Hmmm, I was thinking it was hunter, since nothing had replied like that in 2 weeks. I moved my set up, got the decoys (one hen, one jake) so they could be seen across the creek and commenced to seducing the 'other hunter'. Well it turned out it was a Tom. He came right to the waters edge but wasn't gonna fly over.
I knew when I started that set up that they won't cross water, but hey, I had to try and he was fired up I was sure he wouldn't let that jake steal a hen from him. I was wrong. He walked the waters edge for an hour gobbling his head off. I finally stopped and let him go before anyone who can hunt over there came and popped him.
Hadn't heard a thing otherwise.
In 10 days I can start hunting them for full days. Right now you have to stop at noon. I know where they roost, I'm gonna give it a week to settle. Then set up a blind in the area and try some afternoon roost hunting. Not shooting them off the roost, shooting them when they come to the hill to try and roost. Just to clarify. _________________ The end doesn't justify the means.

They did them Tom's a real favor when they excluded my rifle for hunting.
But it will make me a better hunter in the long run, so oh well. _________________ The end doesn't justify the means.

And the worst part. I get up early, so I can walk in the looooonng way and get behind them. Then the fly down and walk past my truck.
It is driving me so nutz, I am considering going one more moring and walking in the woods staight at the hill the like and only go about 30 yards in. I should be about 50 yards away, to the point I will be happy if I am too far away. I'll just try again later in the week and get a little closer each time.
I think I have been biting off too much trying to force something, when I should hang back, take the easy way and just let it happen (or not). But not spooking them and not having a shot beats spooking them and messing up a shot. _________________ The end doesn't justify the means.
