"George Perry"caught the current world record largemouth bass way back in June on 1932. The monster bass weighed in a 22 pounds 4 ounces, which is a record that many felt would never be topped. Well, it looks like it may finally have happened... or maybe not. A man in Japan, Manabu Kurita, was fishing in lake Biwa, Japan and caught a bass that reportedly weighed in at 22 pounds 5 ounces.
And there in lies both of the twist to the story. Twist one being obvious... the bass was caught in Japan... a place most bass fishermen didn't even know had bass. Sure we knew they had been stocked in Mexico and some even knew bass had been stocked in Africa. But Japan!!! I knew the japanese were really into bass fishing but I personally had no idea the climate in Japan was so favorable to growing record size largemouth bass.
Now onto the second twist. Even though this bass is reportedly heavier than the old record largemouth it will not replace it as the number one bass in the IGFA record books if registered and approved. There is a little know rule in the IGFA rule book that says for fish that weigh under 25 pounds that the new fish must surpass the old record by 2 ounces to become the new number one.
Rules are rules! But don't feel to sorry for Manabu Kurita, he will still have officially caught a bass larger than anyone else and he will still likely make a wheel-barrel full of money off of this fish.
At this time I still don't know what bait he caught it on. Details will be coming and the story is not yet fully written. I am sure there is more to come.
