Alan Schacht, from Vero Beach, Florida and his first buck. Alan hunts a lease in South Carolina, he is 50 years old and has been hunting for 8 years, and this is his first buck.
It was 103 yards away and Alan was using a Remington 7400 with a BSA 3x9x50 in .270 Winchester with a 150 grain Winchester Ballistic Silvertip. "My heart was pounding out of my chest" Alan said, "but having to stand up and turn 180 degrees in order to get a shot allowed me to calm down enough to hold still. My first shot clipped his spine, but I didn't know that and he looked like he was trying to get up again, so I sent a second shot downrange."
If you'll look at the left antler, you'll see where that shot almost took off the front tine! He measured out at 16 inches outside spread and weighed 140 pounds. He fell in tall grass where Alan couldn't see him. Alan said "When my buddy saw me, he said I looked like I'd been smoking a crack pipe. It's a week later and I'm still grinnin'."
Congratulations Alan!
